Shurayk narrated—from Abū Isḥāq, from Jabalah—who said:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not set out on a campaign, he would entrust his weapons to ʿAlī or to Usāmah.” (1)
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār said: Muḥammad ibn Salām related to us, from Yazīd ibn ʿIyāḍ, who said:
“During the truce, Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām presented the Prophet ﷺ with a robe of Dhī Yazan that he had purchased for three hundred dinars. The Prophet returned it, saying: ‘I do not accept the gift of a polytheist.’
Ḥakīm then sold it, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered the buyer to bring it to him.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put the robe on, and when Ḥakīm saw him wearing it he recited:
‘What verdict can judges render after …
A forerunner has appeared, white-blazed and ankleted?’ (2)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ later clothed Usāmah ibn Zayd in that same robe.
When Ḥakīm saw it on Usāmah he exclaimed, ‘Well done, well done, O Usāmah! You are wearing the robe of Dhī Yazan!’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, ‘Say to him: “And what should keep me from it, when I am better than he is and my father is better than his father?”’ (3)
Maʿmar narrated—from al-Zuhrī—who said:
ʿAlī met Usāmah ibn Zayd and said, ‘We always regarded you as one of us, O Usāmah; why will you not join us?’
Usāmah replied, ‘O Abū al-Ḥasan, by Allah, if you were to seize one lip of a lion, I would seize the other with you until we both perished or both survived; but as for this affair you are engaged in, by Allah, I will not enter into it.’
