102 – Muʿayqīb ibn Abī Fāṭimah al-Dawsī (Companion)
He belonged to the first Emigrants and was an ally of the clan of Banū ʿAbd Shams.
He was the keeper of the Prophet’s seal-ring ﷺ.
Abū Bakr placed him in charge of the fayʾ (state revenues), and he served as treasurer for ʿUmar.
He transmitted two hadiths.
Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Mandah alone asserted that he was present at Badr, but this is unsound.
Those who narrated from him include his grandson Iyās ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Muʿayqīb and Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
He took part in the migration to Abyssinia, and it is said that he returned with Jaʿfar around the time of Khaybar.
He was afflicted with leprosy.
Ibn Saʿd records: Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm told us, Ibn Isḥāq related to us, ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar narrated to me from Maḥmūd ibn Labīd, who said:
“Yahyā ibn al-Ḥakam appointed me over Jurash. When I arrived there, the people told me that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar had reported to them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about the sufferer of this disease—leprosy: ‘Avoid him as you would avoid a lion; if he descends into a valley, then go down a different valley.’”
