he then said, “Will you not pledge allegiance?” …—and the remainder of the hadith follows. (1)
Al-Wāqidī stated: “The banner of the tribe of Ashjaʿ on the Day of the Conquest was carried by ʿAwf ibn Mālik.” (2)
Busr (3) ibn ʿUbayd Allah, transmitting from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, related to me from ʿAwf:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was inside a leather tent, and he performed a slow, deliberate ablution.
I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, may I enter?’
He replied, ‘Yes.’
I asked, ‘All of me?’
He said, ‘All of you.’
He then remarked, ‘O ʿAwf, count six things that will occur before the Hour …’—and he recounted the hadith. (4)
(1) The complete wording is: “Will you not give bayʿa to the Messenger of Allah?” We had only recently pledged our allegiance, so we answered, “We have already pledged to you, Messenger of Allah.” He repeated, “Will you not give bayʿa to the Messenger of Allah?” and we gave the same reply. A third time he said, “Will you not give bayʿa to the Messenger of Allah?” whereupon we stretched out our hands and said, “We have pledged to you, Messenger of Allah; on what shall we pledge this time?” He replied, “That you worship Allah, associate nothing with Him, perform the five daily prayers, obey, and—” lowering his voice—“that you ask people for nothing.” I later saw some of those men: if the whip of one of them fell, he would not ask anyone to hand it to him.

(4) The hadith continues: “my death; then the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem); then a plague that will strike you like the plague that afflicts sheep; then wealth will become so abundant that a man will be given one hundred dinars yet remain dissatisfied; then a tribulation that will enter every Arab household; then a truce between you and Banu l-Asfar (the Byzantines). They will break it and march against you under eighty banners, each banner accompanied by twelve thousand men.”
