Al-Waqidī also related: “Bukayr ibn Mismār (1) narrated to us—through ʿUmāra ibn Khuzayma, from his father—who said:
‘I was present at Muʾta. I challenged a man to single combat, struck him down, and he was wearing a helmet set with a ruby. My only concern was the ruby, so I took it.
When we withdrew and were forced to retreat, I brought it back to Madinah and presented it to the Prophet ﷺ. He assigned it to me as a special portion of the booty, and in the time of ʿUmar I sold it for one hundred dinars.’ (2)
Kharija ibn Zayd reported—on the authority of his father—that:
‘When we were writing out the Qur’an codices, I missed an āyah I had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but I found it with Khuzayma ibn Thābit: “Among the believers are men who have been true to the covenant they made with Allah” (Q 33:23). Khuzayma was known as the Man of the Two Testimonies; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted his testimony as equal to that of two men.’ (3)
(1) In the printed edition the name was mistakenly set as “Sinnimar.”
(2) The report is found in al-Waqidi, al-Maghazi, 2/769. The editor, Marsden Jones, erred when he replaced the name “Khuzayma” with “Ghuzayya,” even though the manuscript on which he relied correctly reads “Khuzayma.”
(3) It is transmitted by Abd al-Razzaq in his al-Musannaf (no. 20416) through the chain of Maʿmar → al-Zuhri; from Abd al-Razzaq it is also cited by al-Tabarani (nos. 3712, 4841). Al-Bukhari includes it in his Sahih (8/398, commentary on Surat al-Ahzab) through Abu al-Yaman → Shuʿayb → al-Zuhri.
As for the episode in which the Prophet ﷺ accepted his testimony as equal to that of two men, Abu Dawud records it (no. 3607, Book of Judgments, chapter: When the judge knows a single witness to be truthful he may rule accordingly) through the chain Muhammad b. Yahya b. Faris → al-Hakam b. Nafiʿ → Shuʿayb → al-Zuhri → ʿUmara b. Khuzayma.ʿUmara relates that his uncle, one of the Companions, told him: The Prophet ﷺ bought a horse from a Bedouin and asked him to follow so that he could pay him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ walked on quickly while the Bedouin lagged behind. Some men met the Bedouin and began bargaining for the horse, unaware that the Prophet ﷺ had already purchased it. The Bedouin then called out, “If you are the buyer of this horse, finalise the sale; otherwise I will sell it.” When the Prophet ﷺ heard him, he said, “Did I not already buy it from you?” The Bedouin replied, “By Allah, I did not sell it to you.” The Prophet ﷺ insisted, “Indeed, I bought it from you.” The Bedouin kept saying, “Bring a witness!” Khuzayma b. Thabit thereupon said, “I testify that you bought it.” The Prophet ﷺ turned to Khuzayma and asked, “On what basis do you testify?” He replied, “Because I believe you, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore deemed Khuzayma’s testimony equivalent to that of two men. The chain of transmission is sound.
