He then resided in Medina, afterwards in Basra, and he transmitted several hadiths.
Those who narrated from him include al-Ḥasan al-Baṣri, Muṭarrif ibn al-Shikhkhir, Ibn Burayda, Saʿid ibn Jubayr, Muʿawiya ibn Qurra, Ḥumayd ibn Hilal, Thābit al-Bunani, and others.
Abu Dawud said, “Saʿid ibn Jubayr did not hear from him.”
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣri further stated, “ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal was one of the ten whom ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab sent to us to teach the people. (2)”
I say: He died in the year 60 AH.
His father was also a Companion; he passed away on the road during the Year of the Conquest.
It was also said that ʿAbd Allah was among the bakkāʾīn (those who wept much). (3)
ʿAwf al-Aʿrabi narrated—from Khuzāʿī ibn (4) Ziyād al-Muzani—who said: “ʿAbd Allah was shown …”
(1) In the Musnad, 5/54, the wording transmitted from Abdullah b. Mughaffal is: “I was holding a branch of the tree to shade the Prophet ﷺ while the people were pledging allegiance to him. They said, ‘Shall we pledge to you unto death?’ He replied, ‘No, but do not flee.’” What the author cites, however, is reported by Ahmad, 5/25, and by Muslim (no. 1858) through Maqil b. Yasar, not Abdullah b. Mughaffal: “I remember myself on the Day of the Tree while the Prophet ﷺ was taking the people’s pledge and I was lifting one of its branches above his head. We were fourteen hundred. We did not pledge unto death; rather, we pledged that we would not run away.” This is Muslim’s wording.

(3) The “weepers” (al-bakkaun) are those whom Allah describes: “Nor upon those who, when they came to you that you might provide mounts for them, you said, ‘I can find nothing on which to mount you.’ They turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears, grieving that they could not find anything to spend” (Q 9:92). (4) The words “Khuza‘i b.” are missing in the printed edition.
