performed anywhere else, apart from the Sacred Mosque.’
So al-Arqam sat down and abandoned the journey (1).
On the day of Badr the Prophet ﷺ presented al-Arqam with a sword (2) and later appointed him to supervise the alms-tax. Ahmad ibn Zuhayr was mistaken when he asserted that al-Arqam’s father—Abu al-Arqam—had embraced Islam. Abu Hatim likewise erred when he said that ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Arqam was this Companion’s son; that ‘Abd Allah was a Zuhri who managed the treasury for ‘Uthman, whereas our al-Arqam was a Makhzumi.
It is said that al-Arqam lived to be a little over eighty years old. He passed away in Medina, and Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas led his funeral prayer in accordance with al-Arqam’s own bequest (3). ‘Uthman ibn al-Arqam related: ‘My father died in the year 53 AH at the age of eighty-three’ (4).
He is counted among the narrators in the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal (5).
