He also has a narration describing the Khawarij (secessionists).
Muʿtamir (1) ibn Sulayman said, “Ibn Abi al-Hakam related to me from his uncle Rafiʿ, who said:
‘I was throwing stones at some date-palms that belonged to the Ansar when I was a boy. The Prophet ﷺ saw me and said, “Boy, why are you throwing at the date-palms?” I replied, “So that I can eat.” He said, “Eat whatever falls to the ground.” He then passed his hand over my head and prayed, “O Allah, fill his stomach (2).”’
A similar account is transmitted from Rafiʿ through another chain which al-Hakim cited in his Mustadrak (3).
Khalifah said: He died in Basra in the year 50 AH.
As for:
95 – Rafiʿ ibn ʿAmr al-Muzani al-Basri * (D, S)
He was the brother of ʿA’idh—another man—and both of them were Companions.
(1) In the printed edition the name has been wrongly typeset as “Muammar.”
(2) The isnad is weak because Ibn Abi al-Hakam is an unknown narrator. The report appears in al-Mustadrak 3/444; it is also transmitted by Abu Dawud (2622) in the Book of Jihad, “Chapter: Whoever says one may eat what has fallen,” by Ibn Majah (2299) in the Book of Trade, and by al-Tabarani (no. 4459) through several chains, all of which go back to al-Muʿtamir b. Sulayman, from Ibn Abi al-Hakam al-Ghifari, from his grandmother, from her paternal uncle Ibn ʿAmr. Another wording has: al-Muʿtamir, from Ibn Abi al-Hakam al-Ghifari, who said: “My grandmother told me, from the uncle of Abu Rafiʿ.”
(3) Al-Hakim (no. 4443) records it through the route of al-Fadl b. Musa, who said: “Salih b. Abi Jubayr”—misprinted in the edition as “Jaʿfar”—“narrated to us from his father, from Rafiʿ b. ʿAmr al-Ghifari.” Al-Tirmidhi also cites it (1288) in the Book of Sales via this chain. Salih b. Abi Jubayr and his father are declared reliable only by Ibn Hibban, yet al-Tirmidhi still graded the hadith authentic.
