(1) The base manuscript reads with the letters tha and the un-dotted ʿayn. In Tahdhib al-Kamal it appears as “Naʿila,” with a nun and the same ʿayn. Above the word the copyist added the note “sahh” (correct). The same reading is found in Tabaqat Ibn Saad, Usud al-Ghaba, and al-Mustadrak. Ibn Hajar, in al-Isaba, lists him under the entry of Rafiʿ, the brother of al-Hakam, with the diminutive form “Naʿila,” written with a nun and a dotted ʿayn. Tabaqat Khalifa, al-Isaba, Jumharat Ansab al-Arab, and al-Tabarani, however, record the name as “Thalaba.” (2) The author has slipped here; the correct wording is “except Muslim,” as indicated by the symbol next to the name. His hadith is found in al-Bukhari, vol. 9, p. 564, Book of Slaughtered Animals, chapter: “The meat of domesticated donkeys,” through the chain: ʿAli b. ʿAbd Allah – Sufyan – ʿAmr b. Dinar, who said: I asked Jabir b. Zayd, “They claim that the Messenger of Allah forbade the meat of domesticated donkeys.” He replied, “That was indeed what al-Hakam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifari used to say when he was among us in Basra …”
