Roughly eight hadiths are transmitted from him, and the Two Shaykhs concur on the authenticity of three of them. ⦗1⦘ His transmitters include his son ʿAbdullāh and his daughter Ḥafṣah, his nephew al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, ʿAmr ibn Aws al-Thaqafī, Ibn Abī Mulaykah, and others.
He is the one whom the Prophet ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, instructed to take his sister ʿĀʾishah to al-Tanʿīm so that she could begin an ʿumrah. ⦗2⦘ A full entry on him appears in Tarīkh Dimashq.
He died in 53 AH. That dating, however, is untenable, for Sahih Muslim records that he visited ʿĀʾishah on the day Saʿd died and performed ablution. She said to him, “Complete your wudūʾ thoroughly; I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Woe to the heels from the Fire.’” ⦗3⦘
He became infatuated with the daughter of al-Jūdī and composed the following verse for her:
“I remembered Layla, with the very heavens beneath her; / So what is the daughter of al-Jūdī to Layla—and what am I?”

(3) Reported by Muslim, no. 240, Book of Purification, “Chapter on the obligation to wash both feet completely,” through several chains from Ibn Wahb — Kharrama b. Bukayr — his father — Salim, the client of Shaddad, who said: “I entered upon ‘Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, on the day Sa‘d b. Abi Waqqas died, and ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakr entered ….”
