He said, “You have acted in accordance with the Sunnah.” (1)
Ibn Saʿd remarks: “He was present at Ṣiffīn on Muʿāwiyah’s side.” (2)
Ibn Yūnus adds: “He witnessed the conquest of Egypt, took an allotment there, and commanded the troops in Egypt on behalf of Muʿāwiyah. Three years later Muʿāwiyah dismissed him, then sent him on a naval expedition. He used to dye his hair black, and his grave is on Mount Muqaṭṭam.
He died in the year 58 AH.
ʿUqbah narrated: ‘I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah for emigration and remained with him.’ (3)
He also said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us while we were in the Ṣuffah’ (4)—and I was one of its dwellers—and ʿUqbah was numbered among the renowned archers.
Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Hubulī reported that ʿUqbah had one of the finest voices for the Qur’an.
So ʿUmar said to him, “Recite to me.” He recited, and ʿUmar wept.
Ibn Abī Khālid, reporting from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, said that he was among the distinguished Companions of Muhammad. (5)
I add: He once held the governorship of Egypt, and he used to dye his hair black.
