Abū Ṣāliḥ relates: Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to me, from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir, Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb, and another transmitter. They had all heard Abū Umāmah, who heard ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah say:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was staying at ʿUkāẓ and asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He replied, ‘Abū Bakr and Bilāl.’ So I accepted Islam, and I counted myself to be a quarter of all the Muslims (1).”
No record has been preserved of the year of his death.
Ḥarīz reports: Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah, who said:
“I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at ʿUkāẓ and asked, ‘Who has followed you?’ He answered, ‘One free man and one slave. Go on your way until Allah grants His Messenger a firm foothold (2).’”
Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ also transmits from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir, from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah, who said:
“I embraced Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ said to me, ‘Return to your people.’ I came back to him again before the Conquest (3).”
I said, “O Prophet of God, what about ablution? Tell me about it.”
He replied: “Whenever one of you brings the water for his wudu, then rinses his mouth and inhales water into his nose and blows it out, the sins of his face drop from the edges of his beard with the water. Then, when he washes his hands up to the elbows, the sins of his hands fall from the tips of his fingers with the water. Then, when he wipes his head, the sins of his head fall from the ends of his hair with the water. Then, when he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall from the ends of his toes with the water. If after that he stands to pray, praises Allah, extols Him, glorifies Him as He deserves, and directs his heart wholly to Allah, he will leave his sins behind just as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.”
‘Amr b. ‘Abasa related this report to Abu Umama, one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Umama said to him, “O ‘Amr b. ‘Abasa, think carefully about what you are saying! Can a man be granted all of this in a single sitting?” ‘Amr replied, “O Abu Umama, old age has overtaken me, my bones have become fragile, and my death is near; I have no need to lie about Allah or His Messenger. Even if I had heard it from the Messenger of Allah only once, or twice, or three times”—he counted up to seven—“I would not report it in this way. But I heard it many more times than that.”
It was recorded by Ahmad, 4/122, and Ibn Sa‘d, 4/215, 217.
(1) Chain of transmission: sound (hasan). Ibn Sa‘d also transmitted it through Ma‘n b. ‘Isa with the same chain. Al-Hafiz lists it in al-Isaba, 7/128, and attributes it to al-Tabarani and to Abu Nu‘aym in Dalail al-Nubuwwa.
(2) Chain of transmission: authentic (sahih). Also recorded by Ahmad, 4/385, and Ibn Sa‘d, 4/215, through two chains from Hariz b. ‘Uthman—miswritten by Ibn Sa‘d as “Jarir b. ‘Uthman”.
