Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Narrators from him included: Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, Sahl ibn Saʿd, Jubayr ibn Nufayr, Kathīr ibn Murrah, Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb, al-Ṣunābiḥī, ʿAdī ibn Arṭāh, Ḥabīb ibn ʿUbayd, and a number of others.
It is also said that Ibn Masʿūd transmitted from him.
He served as one of the army commanders on the day of the Battle of Yarmuk.
ʿAmr ibn Abī Salamah al-Tinnīsī related: “Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh told us, from Naṣr ibn ʿAlqamah, from his brother, from Ibn ʿĀʾidh, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, who said:
Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī and ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah—each of them used to say, ‘I saw myself as one-quarter of the whole of Islam alongside the Messenger of Allah; no one had embraced Islam before me except the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr, and Bilāl.’ Each of them would repeat this, so that it became unclear which of the two had entered Islam first. (1)”
By unanimous report ʿAmr settled in Ḥoms.
It is also said that he fought at Badr.
No one corroborated ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Saʿīd and Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā on this point. (2)
The Banū Bajīlah are a clan of Sulaym. (3)

(1) Reported by al-Tabarani, no. 1618, and by al-Hakim, 3/341-342; the latter declared the hadith sound and al-Dhahabi concurred, even though Sadaqa b. Abd Allah—nicknamed al-Samin—was rated weak by Ahmad, Ibn Maʿin, al-Bukhari, al-Nasaʾi, Muslim, al-Daraqutni and others. Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ, 9/327, stating: “al-Tabarani transmitted it through two isnads, one of which is uninterrupted and whose narrators are reliable.” I believe he is referring not to the present chain but to the one that will be mentioned on p. 459, n. 1, which Ibn Hajar likewise attributes to al-Tabarani, as will be shown. (2) That is, on the assumption that he fought at Badr. Al-Isaba, 7/127, reads: “Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Isa al-Baghdadi, when listing the Companions who settled in Homs, claimed that Amr b. Abasa was among the earliest Muhajirun and took part in Badr.” So he said, and ʿAbd al-Samad b. Saʿid followed him… Ibn ʿAsakir comments: “Thus did the two assert, but no one else has corroborated his attendance at Badr.” (3) In the printed edition the word has been corrupted to “salam.”
