the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys. He had lagged behind his mount, so I held him up with my hand until he woke. He then said, “O Allah, safeguard Abu Qatadah as he safeguarded me tonight. I fear we have only wearied you.” (1)
Ibn Saʿd said: Abu Qatadah is Ibn Ribʿī ibn Baldamah ibn Khunās ibn Sinān ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿAdī ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salamah. He added: There is disagreement about his given name: Ibn Isḥāq said it was al-Ḥārith; Ibn ʿUmārah and al-Wāqidī said al-Nuʿmān; others say ʿAmr.
His children were: ʿAbd Allah, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Thābit, ʿUbayd, Umm al-Banīn, and Umm Abān. He fought at Uḥud and the Trench.
Ayyūb narrated from Muḥammad that the Prophet ﷺ sent for Abu Qatadah. They replied, “He is combing his hair,” so he sent again, and they replied, “He is combing his hair,” and he sent a third time, receiving the same reply. He then said, “Shave his head.”
Abu Qatadah came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, spare me this time; by Allah, I shall make it up to you.” (2) The very first enemy he met thereafter was Masʿadah, the leader of the polytheists, and he killed him.
