Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

from his father:

Abū Qatādah said, “I was washing my head—I had already washed one side of it—when I heard my mare Jirwah neighing and pawing the ground. So I said, ‘Battle has broken out.’ I rose without washing the other side, mounted while wearing only a cloak, and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ crying, ‘To arms! To arms!’

I caught up with al-Miqdad and rode alongside him for a while; then my horse—being swifter than his—moved ahead. Al-Miqdad told me that Masʿadah had slain Muḥriz—meaning Muḥriz ibn Naḍlah. I said to al-Miqdad, ‘Either I shall die, or I shall kill the killer of Muḥriz.’

He spurred his horse, and I followed. Masʿadah halted to confront me. I dismounted, killed him, and led away his horse with me.

When the people later passed by, they gathered around, saw my cloak, recognized it, and said, ‘Abū Qatādah has been killed.’

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘No. Rather, it is the man whom Abū Qatādah has killed, and he is wearing Abū Qatādah’s cloak. So leave his spoils and his horse for Abū Qatādah.’

When he reached me he said, ‘O Allah, bless his hair and his skin! May your face prosper! Did you kill Masʿadah?’

I said, ‘Yes.’

He asked, ‘What is that on your face?’

I replied, ‘An arrow that struck me.’

He said, ‘Come closer to me.’ He spat on it, and it never caused me pain nor did it fester thereafter.

Abū Qatādah passed away at the age of seventy, yet he looked as though he were fifteen.

He said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also gave me Masʿadah’s horse and his weapons.’ (1)
