this fire.”
Tamīm replied, “Commander of the Faithful, who am I and what am I (to face it)?”
ʿUmar kept at him until he rose and went with him, and I followed them. The two of them headed for the blaze; Tamīm began striking at it with his hands until it withdrew into a mountain ravine, and he went in after it. All the while ʿUmar kept saying, “The one who has seen is not like the one who has not,” repeating it three times.
ʿAffān heard this report from Ḥammād. As for Ibn Harmal, he is unknown (1).
Qatādah reported from Ibn Sīrīn—and he also reported from Anas—that Tamīm al-Dārī purchased a cloak for one thousand dirhams to wear when he went out to the prayer (2).
Ḥammād narrated from Thābit that Tamīm bought a fine garment for one thousand (dirhams) which he would put on during the night when Laylat al-Qadr is expected (3).
Al-Zuhrī narrated from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd: “The first person to deliver public exhortation (qasṣ) was Tamīm al-Dārī. He sought permission from ʿUmar, who allowed him, so he preached while standing.”
Usāmah ibn Zayd narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, that Tamīm asked ʿUmar for years to let him address the people with admonitions, but ʿUmar kept refusing. When he persisted, ʿUmar said, “What will you say?” He answered, “I shall recite the Qur’an to them, enjoin them to do good, and forbid them from evil.” ʿUmar responded, “That is pure gain. Give the admonition before I go out for the Friday prayer.”
