Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Saʿīd al-Jurayrī, reporting from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, from a man who said:
“I came to Tamīm al-Dārī, and after he had narrated to us I asked, ‘What is your daily portion (juzʾ) of the Qur’an?’
“He replied, ‘Perhaps you are one of those who recites the Qur’an and then, come morning, declares, “I finished the whole Qur’an last night.” By Him in whose hand is my soul, for me to perform three supererogatory rakʿahs (units of prayer) is dearer than to recite the Qur’an in a single night and then wake up and announce it.’

“When his answer irritated me I said, ‘By Allah, you—O remnant of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—are more entitled to remain silent, refrain from teaching, and stop rebuking those who ask you!’

“When he saw that I was angry, he softened and said, ‘Shall I not explain, my nephew? Suppose I am a strong believer and you are a weak believer: you try to shoulder my strength with your weakness, cannot manage it, and break down. Or suppose you are the strong believer and I am the weak one: when I try to bear your strength with my weakness, I break down. Rather, take from yourself for your religion and from your religion for yourself, until the affair is balanced for you upon a form of worship you can sustain.’ (1)

Hammād ibn Salamah related from al-Jurayrī, from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Harmalah, who said:
“I arrived in Medina and remained in the mosque for three days without tasting any food. Then I came to ʿUmar and said, ‘A repentant man comes to you before you have power over him.’
“ʿUmar asked, ‘Who are you?’
“I replied, ‘Muʿāwiyah ibn Harmalah.’
“He said, ‘Go to the best of the believers and stay with him.’

“He (Muʿāwiyah) continued: Whenever Tamīm al-Dārī began the prayer he would stretch his hands out to the right and left, drawing two men with them. I prayed beside him, and he pulled me in, and food was brought to us. While we were there one night, a fire suddenly broke out in the Ḥarrah district, so ʿUmar came to Tamīm and said, ‘Get up to
