Qurrah narrated from Ibn Sīrīn who said:
“Those who had gathered the entire Qur’an during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah were Ubayy, ʿUthmān, Zayd, and Tamīm al-Dārī.” (1)
Abū Qilābah reported from Abū al-Muhallab: “Tamīm used to complete the Qur’an every seven nights.” (2)
ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal related from Ibn Sīrīn that “Tamīm al-Dārī would recite the whole Qur’an in a single rakʿah (unit of prayer).” (3)
Abū al-Ḍuḥā narrated from Masrūq, who said: A man from Mecca told me, “This is the spot where your brother Tamīm al-Dārī stood. He prayed through the night until dawn—or nearly so—reciting one verse over and over while weeping: ‘Or do those who commit evil deeds suppose that We will make them like those who believe and do righteous deeds?’ [al-Jāthiyah (4): 20] (4).”
Abū Nubātah Yūnus ibn Yaḥyā narrated from al-Munkadir ibn Muḥammad, from his father, that “Tamīm al-Dārī once slept through the night and failed to rise for the night vigil, so as a consequence he spent an entire year standing in prayer without sleeping, as penance for what he had done.” (5)
