Shurahbīl: there is some weakness in him.
ʿUbayd ibn al-Sabbāq said: Zayd related to me that Abu Bakr said to him,
“You are a young, intelligent man in whom we place no suspicion. You used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; therefore trace the Quran and compile it.”
I replied, “How can you undertake something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself did not do?”
He said, “By Allah, it is certainly the best course.”
Abu Bakr continued to press me until Allah opened my heart to what He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and ʿUmar. I then began collecting the Quran, gathering it from parchments, shoulder-blades, palm-leaf stalks, and the memories of men. (1)
Anas said, “During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, four men compiled the Quran, all of them from the Ansar: Ubayy, Muʿādh, Zayd ibn Thābit, and Abu Zayd.” (2)
Khālid al-Ḥaddāʾ, from Abū Qilābah, from Anas, narrates from the Prophet ﷺ: “The most knowledgeable of my community regarding the laws of inheritance is Zayd ibn Thābit.” (3)
A similar wording is reported in the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar.
