and al-Awzaʿi recited it to us, then Muhammad recited it to us, then al-Dārimī recited it to us, then ʿĪsā recited it to us, then Ibn Ḥammūyah recited it to us, then al-Dāwūdī recited it to us, then Abū al-Waqt recited it to us, and finally ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar recited it to us.
I say: our own shaykhs have likewise recited it to us (1).
Safwān ibn ʿAmr al-Ḥimṣī narrated: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr told us, from his father, from ʿAwf ibn Mālik, who said:
The Prophet of Allah set out, and I was with him, until we entered a Jewish synagogue. He said, “O assembly of Jews, bring me twelve men who will testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Allah will then lift His wrath from you.”
They fell silent, so he repeated his request, and none of them responded.
He said, “By Allah, I am al-Hāshir (the Gatherer), I am al-ʿĀqib (2), and I am al-Muṣṭafā (the Chosen One), whether you believe or deny.”
When he was about to leave, one of them said, “Wait a moment, O Muhammad. My people, what sort of man do you consider me among you?”
They replied, “There is no one among us more knowledgeable than you.”
He said, “Then I testify before Allah that he is the Prophet of Allah.”
