the people of Paradise!’
He replied, ‘Paradise belongs to Allah; He admits into it whomever He wills. In the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah I once saw a dream:
It was as though a man came to me and said, “Come.” He led me along a vast highway. As we were walking, a road opened to my left and I wanted to take it, but he said, “You are not of its people.” Then another road appeared to my right, so I followed it until we reached a slippery mountain. He took me by the hand, helped me up, and suddenly I was on its summit, yet I could find no footing and could not steady myself. There I saw an iron pillar with a golden ring at its top. Again he grasped my hand, lifted me until I seized the ring, and said, “Hold firmly to the ring.”
I told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the dream, and he said, “You have seen something good. The broad highway is the place of assembly (al-maḥshar). The road that branched off to your left is the road of the people of the Fire—you are not one of them. The road on your right is the road of the people of Paradise. The slippery mountain is the station of the martyrs. The ring is the firm handhold of Islam; hold fast to it until you die.”
And that man was ʿAbd Allah ibn Salam. (1)
Jarir narrated from al-Aʿmash, from Sulayman ibn Mushir, from Kharashah, who said:
‘I was sitting in a circle while Ibn Salam was addressing them; when he rose they said, “Whoever wishes to look at a man of Paradise, let him look at this one.” I followed him and questioned him … and he related the entire account in full. (2)
The report is authentic.
Bishr ibn Shaghaf also transmitted from ʿAbd Allah ibn Salam that he was present at the conquest of Nahawand.'
