Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

to Medina and said, “I am going to question you about three matters that only a prophet can know: What is the first of the portents of the Hour? What will be the first food the inhabitants of Paradise eat? And by what cause does a child resemble his father or his mother?”

The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Gabriel has just informed me of them.”

ʿAbd Allah said, “That angel is the one the Jews regard as their enemy.”

The Prophet ﷺ explained, “As for the first portent of the Hour: it will be a fire that erupts in the East and drives the people to the West. The first thing the people of Paradise will eat will be the extra lobe of a fish’s liver. As for resemblance: when the man’s fluid prevails, the child takes after him, and when the woman’s fluid prevails, the child takes after her.”

ʿAbd Allah declared, “I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.”

He then said, “Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a people given to slander. If they learn of my acceptance of Islam, they will revile me. Send for them and ask them about me.”

So he ﷺ sent for them and asked, “What sort of man is Ibn Salam among you?”

They replied, “He is our rabbi and the son of our rabbi, our scholar and the son of our scholar.”

He ﷺ said, “If he were to embrace Islam, would you follow suit?”

They answered, “May Allah protect him from that.”

Then ʿAbd Allah came out and proclaimed, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

They retorted, “He is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us, the most ignorant of us and the son of the most ignorant!”

ʿAbd Allah said, “Messenger of Allah, did I not tell you that they are a slanderous people?” (1)

ʿAbd al-Warith narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Suhayb reported from Anas:

When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, the people exclaimed, “The Prophet of Allah has arrived!” They craned their necks to look, and Ibn Salam—who was in his date-palm grove cutting clusters—heard the news. He hurried off without even setting down the bunch he was trimming. He listened to the Prophet ﷺ and then returned to his family. When the Prophet of Allah was alone, he came to him and said, “I bear witness…”

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, 62/61 in “The Beginning of the Prophets,” 7/212 in “The Merits of the Ansar,” and 8/125–126 in the “Tafsir” section, through several chains from Humayd on the authority of Anas. The word buht is read with a damma on both the b and the h, though the h may also be read with sukun. It is the plural of buhit, like qadhub from qadhib or qalb from qalib, and denotes a person who astonishes his listener by inventing lies against him.
