be overpowered by women—but I never feared that they would overpower you. Therefore, I will neither enter your house nor eat any of your food! (1)
This report is singular.
It was transmitted by al-Nufaylī, from Ibn ʿUlayyah, from him.
Ibn Abī Dhʿīb, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbbās, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb, reported:
“Abū Ayyūb used to differ with Marwān. Marwān asked, ‘What moves you to do this?’ He replied, ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing the prayers. If you act in conformity with what I saw from him, we will concur with you; but if you depart from it, we will depart from you.’ (2)
Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ziyād ibn Anʿum, from his father, said:
Our ship drew alongside the vessel of Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī at sea. Among us was a man given to joking; he would say to the keeper of our provisions, ‘May Allah reward you with good and righteousness,’ and the man would become angry.
We said to Abū Ayyūb, ‘There is someone here who becomes angry whenever we say to him, “May Allah reward you with good.”’
He replied, ‘Reverse it for him.’
We used to remark among ourselves, ‘If good does not reform a man, evil will.’
So the joker said to him, ‘May Allah reward you with evil and affliction.’
The man laughed and said, ‘You never give up your joking!’ (3)
