I have already noted in Tabaqāt al-Qurrāʾ that Abu Mūsā died in the month of Dhu l-Ḥijjah, in the year 44 AH, and this is the soundest report.
Ibn Saʿd relates: Yazīd and ʿAffān informed us, both saying: Ḥammād narrated to us, from Thābit, from Anas:
Abu Mūsā possessed a sweet voice. One night he rose to pray, and the Prophet’s wives ﷺ heard him and stood to listen. When morning came he was told, “The women heard your recitation.” He replied, “Had I known, I would have embellished it for you with the finest embellishment and stirred your hearts with even greater longing.” (1)
Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: Whenever ʿUmar saw Abu Mūsā he would say, “Remind us, Abu Mūsā,” whereupon he would recite before him. (2)
Shuʿbah narrates, from Abū Maslamah, from Abū Naḍrah: ʿUmar said to Abu Mūsā, “Make us yearn for our Lord.” So he recited, and when they said, “The prayer!” he responded, “Are we not already in prayer?!” (3)
Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl narrates from Abū Burdah, who said: My mother told me that when Abu Mūsā departed after being removed from Basra, he had with him nothing but six hundred dirhams—the allowance for his family. (4)
Al-Zubayr ibn al-Khurrīt narrates from Abū Labīd, who said: We used to liken Abu Mūsā’s speech to that of a butcher who never misses the joint. (5)
