Allāh al-Baṣrī narrated to us; al-Anṣārī narrated to us; and Sulaymān narrated—ḥā’.
By this same chain as far as al-Shāfiʿī, Muḥammad ibn Maslamah—whose wording this is—narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, said:
“We were with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey. Whenever the people climbed a pass or an incline, as a man reached the top he would say in a loud voice, lā ilāha illā Allāh, Allāhu akbar (there is no deity except Allah; Allah is Most Great). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was riding his mule, guiding it up the mountain, and he said: ‘People, you are not calling upon One who is deaf or absent.’
He then said, ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays—or, Abū Mūsā—shall I not direct you to a phrase that is one of the treasures of Paradise?’
I replied, ‘Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.’
He said, ‘Say: lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh (1) (There is no might nor power except with Allah).’”
It has already been mentioned that Abū Mūsā died in the year 42 AH.
Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim said he died in the year 42.
It is also said: in the year (2) 43.
Abū Nuʿaym, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, Ibn Numayr, and Qaʿnab ibn al-Muḥarrar (3) said he died in 44.
As for al-Wāqidī, he held that his death occurred in 52.
Al-Madāʾinī said it was in 53, after al-Mughīrah.
