Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid also transmitted the report from Ibn Buraydah in a concise form.
Abū Salamah related—from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Abū Mūsā has certainly been granted a flute from among the flutes of the family of David.” (1)
Khalid ibn Nāfiʿ reported to us: Saʿīd ibn Abī Burdah narrated from his father, from Abū Mūsā, that the Prophet ﷺ and ʿĀʾishah once passed by him while he was reciting in his house, and they paused to listen to his recitation. When morning came, the Prophet ﷺ informed him of this, whereupon Abū Mūsā said, “Had I known you were there, I would have beautified it for you with the finest embellishment.” (2)
Khalid was judged weak.
Through Uthman ibn Umar, from Malik, from Ibn Buraida, from his father; the chain is sound.
Al-Baghawi also cites it in Sharh al-Sunnah, 5/37, through Uthman ibn Amr al-Dabbi, from Amr ibn Marzuq, from Malik ibn Mighwal, from Abd Allah ibn Buraida, from his father.
Abbreviated versions are found in Abu Dawud (1493), Ahmad 5/360, al-Tirmidhi (3471), al-Nasa i 3/52, and Ibn Majah (3875): the Messenger of Allah heard a man say, “O Allah, I ask You, for I testify that You are Allah; there is no deity but You, the One, al-Samad, who neither begets nor is born, and none is comparable to Him.” He replied: “You have asked Allah by the Name which, when He is asked by it, He grants, and when He is invoked by it, He answers.” The chain is sound; Ibn Hibban (2383) and al-Hakim 1/504 authenticated it, and al-Dhahabi endorsed their judgment.
(1) Sound. Reported by Ibn Sa d 4/107, Ahmad 2/450, and Ibn Majah (1341) through Yazid ibn Harun, from Muhammad ibn Amr with this chain; also by al-Nasa i 2/180, Ahmad 2/369, and Ibn Asakir, 478, through two routes, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurayra.
(2) Reported by Ibn Asakir, 477, via Abu Ya la, from Shurayh ibn Yunus with this chain. Al-Haythami, Majma 9/359-360, notes that al-Tabarani also transmitted it and that its narrators are those of the Sahih except Khalid ibn Nafi al-Ash ari; Ibn Hibban declared him reliable, whereas several scholars considered him weak.
Al-Hakim likewise records it in al-Mustadrak 3/466 through Uthman ibn Sa id al-Darimi, from Mihriz ibn Hisham al-Kufi, from Khalid ibn Nafi ; he judged it authentic and al-Dhahabi concurred, while the author here critiques it on account of Khalid, as you can see.
