Durayd ibn al-Ṣimmah; Durayd was slain and Allah put his followers to flight.
A man then shot Abū ʿĀmir in the knee with an arrow, leaving him gravely wounded.(1)
I said, “Uncle, who struck you?”
He pointed the man out, so I went after him and caught up with him. When he saw me he turned to run, and I kept calling after him, “Are you not ashamed? Are you not an Arab? Will you not stand your ground?”
So he stopped, and we confronted one another. We traded two blows, and I killed him. I then returned to Abū ʿĀmir and said, “Allah has killed your assailant.”
He said, “Pull this arrow out.”
I pulled it out, and fluid gushed from the wound. He then said, “Nephew, go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, convey my greetings to him, and ask him to seek forgiveness for me.”
Abū ʿĀmir appointed me commander over the people; he lingered a short while and then died.
When we reached the Prophet ﷺ and I informed him, he performed ablution, raised his hands, and said, “O Allah, forgive ʿUbayd Abū ʿĀmir,” until I could see the whiteness of his armpits.
He then said, “O Allah, place him on the Day of Resurrection above many of Your creatures.”
I asked, “And me, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied, “O Allah, forgive ʿAbdullāh ibn Qays his sin, and admit him on the Day of Resurrection with an honorable admission.”(2)
With this same chain, Abū Mūsā narrated:
I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Jiʿrānah(3) when a Bedouin came and said, “Will you not fulfill for me what you promised?”
He answered, “Rejoice.”
The man said, “You have given me too many glad tidings.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to me and to Bilāl and said, “This man has rejected the good news, so you two accept it.”
They said, “We accept, O Messenger of Allah.”
He then called for a cup and washed his hands.
