Al-Wāqidī said: “He owned a number of houses close to the dwellings of the Prophet ﷺ, and whenever the Messenger of Allah took a new wife, Ḥārithah would vacate one of his houses for him, until the Prophet remarked, ‘I have become embarrassed by Ḥārithah because he keeps surrendering his homes to us.’” (1)
Ḥārithah remained alive until the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah.
Among his descendants was the ḥadīth scholar Abū al-Rijāl Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥārithah ibn al-Nuʿmān al-Anṣārī, the son of the jurist ʿAmrah. (2)
He—meaning Ḥārithah—is the Companion about whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I entered Paradise and heard a recitation. I asked, ‘Who is that?’ It was said, ‘Ḥārithah.’ The Prophet ﷺ then said, ‘Such is the reward of filial devotion.’” He was indeed most dutiful to his mother. (3)
82 – Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays, may Allah be pleased with him, son of Sulaym ibn Ḥaḍḍār ibn Ḥarb—the eminent Imām,
(1) Ibn Saʿd, vol. 3, p. 488.
(2) Ibn Saʿd, vol. 3, p. 488. ʿAmra was the daughter of ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Saʿd b. Zurara al-Ansari of Medina; she transmitted extensively from ʿAisha, and her narrations are found in all six canonical collections.
(3) Recorded by ʿAbd al-Razzaq in al-Musannaf (no. 20119), and through his chain by Ahmad (Musnad, 6:151–152, 166–167), from ʿAmra, from ʿAisha; the isnad is sound. Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid 9:313, stating that Ahmad and Abu Yaʿla report it with transmitters who meet the criteria of the two Sahihs. Al-Humaydi also relates it in his Musnad (no. 285) through Sufyan, from al-Zuhri, from ʿAmra, from ʿAisha. Al-Hakim authenticated it (3:208) and al-Dhahabi agreed. Al-Hafiz in al-Isaba 2:190 ascribes it to al-Nasaʾi through al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwa, from ʿAisha, and deems the chain sound.
