Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī mentioned him and said, “I have never seen anyone better than he.”
I say: He has a few hadiths in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (1) and in the Sunan.
His mother was present at the birth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Those who reported from him include Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, Yazīd and Muṭarrif—the two sons of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr—Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah, and others.
Sālim ibn Nūḥ—through al-Jurayrī, from Abū l-ʿAlā, from ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ—related that he dispatched some of his slave lads on a trading journey. When they returned he asked, “What have you brought?” They said, “We have brought merchandise that earns ten dirhams for every dirham.” He asked, “And what is it?” They answered, “Wine.” He exclaimed, “Wine, when we have been forbidden to drink it and to sell it?!” He then opened the mouths of the skins and poured it out (2).
Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd—on the authority of al-Ḥasan, from ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ—narrated the same story in a similar wording.
He passed away, may Allah have mercy on him, in the year 51 AH.
