Al-Fasawī relates in his History: Muḥammad ibn Muṣaffā told us, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd told us, from Mūsā ibn Wardān, from his father, from Jābir, who said:
“Muʿāwiyah arrived accompanied by the people of Syria. A depraved man from the Jordan district heard what Muḥammad ibn Maslamah had done—namely, that he was sitting apart from both ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah—so he burst into his house and killed him.
Muʿāwiyah then sent word to Kaʿb ibn Mālik: ‘What is your opinion of Muḥammad ibn Maslamah?’ (1)”
Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Numayr, Shabāb, and a number of others said: “Muḥammad ibn Maslamah died in Ṣafar, in the year 43 AH. (2)”
Yazīd ibn Hārūn reported: Hishām informed us, from al-Ḥasan, that the Prophet ﷺ gave Muḥammad ibn Maslamah a sword and said: “Fight the polytheists with it; but when you see the Muslims turning their swords against one another, strike it against a rock until it breaks, then remain in your house until either an errant hand reaches you or an appointed death overtakes you. (3)”
A similar wording is found in the mursal reports of Zayd ibn Aslam.
Muḥammad ibn Maslamah lived for seventy-seven years.
