In the sound collections, Jabir relates that Kaʿb ibn al-Ashraf was killed at the hands of Muhammad ibn Maslamah. (1)
Ibn al-Mubarak reported: Ibn ʿUyaynah told us, from Musa ibn Abi ʿIsa, who said:
ʿUmar came to the mushraba (2) of the Banu Haritha and found Muhammad ibn Maslamah there. He asked, “O Muhammad, how do you view me?”
He replied, “I see you as I wish and as those who wish you well would wish: strong in collecting wealth, above reproach concerning it, and just in distributing it. Should you incline from the straight course, we would straighten you—just as an arrow is straightened on the thiqaf (arrow-straightener).”
ʿUmar said, “Praise be to Allah who has placed me among a people who, if I incline, straighten me.” (3)
Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated—from ʿAmr ibn Saʿid—from his father—from ʿAbayah ibn Rifaʿah:
Word reached ʿUmar that Saʿd had built a fortress and had remarked, “The small voice has been cut off.” ʿUmar therefore sent Muhammad ibn Maslamah—whenever ʿUmar wanted a matter executed exactly as he intended, he dispatched him. Muhammad travelled to Kufa, hacked at the structure and set fire to the gate of Saʿd’s residence. When Saʿd arrived, he said to him, “News has reached ʿUmar that you said: ‘The small voice has been cut off.’” Saʿd swore that he had never uttered those words. (4)
Hisham—on the authority of Ibn Sirin—from Hudhayfah—said:
“There is no one for whom I do not fear trials except Muhammad ibn Maslamah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘The turmoil will not harm him.’” (5)
