Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

that Hudhayfah said, “If there is any word I can utter that will ward off twenty lashes from me, I will most certainly say it.”

Khalid narrates—through Abu Qilabah, from Hudhayfah—that he said, “I sometimes barter one part of my religion for another, fearing that I might lose it altogether.⦗1⦘”

Abu Nuʿaym reports: Saʿd ibn Aws told us, on the authority of Bilal ibn Yahya, who said, “It has reached me that Hudhayfah used to say, ‘No Companion who lived to see this affair escaped without having to sacrifice some portion of his religion in order to preserve another.’

They asked him, ‘And you?’

He replied, ‘And I, by Allah. When I visit a man—and everyone has both merits and faults—I mention his merits and pass over the rest. At times one of them invites me to lunch, and I say, “I am fasting,” while in fact I am not.’

A group transmit—through al-Hasan—that when death approached Hudhayfah he said, “A beloved one has come to a man in need. May the one who feels remorse never prosper! Do I not know what will come after me? Praise be to Allah who has let me precede the tribulation—its leaders and its rough followers.⦗2⦘”

Shuʿbah relates to us—through ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Maysarah, from al-Nazzal ibn Sabrah—who said: I asked Abu Masʿud al-Ansari, “What did Hudhayfah say at the time of his death?” He answered, “When the last part of the night arrived he said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from a morning that ends in the Fire’—three times—then he said, ‘Buy me two white garments, for they will remain on me only a short while before they are exchanged for something better, or else they will be stripped from me in an ugly stripping.’”
