Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would articulate his words slowly and clearly, explaining them as he went. It is therefore quite possible that, in that one gathering, he said no more than would fill a single booklet; he only mentioned the most momentous events. Had he gone on to relate further details of everything that is destined to occur, it would not have been feasible for him to recount it in the span of a year—indeed, not even in several years. Reflect on this.

Hudhayfah died in al-Mada’in in the year 36 AH, having reached old age.

Ibn Sīrīn said: ʿUmar placed Hudhayfah in charge of al-Mada’in, and Hudhayfah read his letter of appointment to the people there. They said, “Ask for whatever you wish.” He replied, “Food for me to eat and straw to feed this donkey of mine for as long as I remain among you.”

He stayed with them for as long as Allah willed; then ʿUmar wrote to him, “Come.” When news of his approach reached ʿUmar, he lay in wait for him along the road. Seeing Hudhayfah in exactly the same condition in which he had first departed, ʿUmar went up to him, embraced him, and said, “You are my brother, and I am yours.” (1)

Mālik ibn Mighwal, on the authority of Ṭalḥah, said: “Hudhayfah arrived at al-Mada’in riding a donkey, his legs dangling down, with a bone that still had some meat on it and a loaf of bread in his hand.” (2)

Saʿīd ibn Masrūq al-Thawrī, on the authority of ʿIkrimah, said: “That is the way the prophets used to ride—letting their legs hang down on one side.”

Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh said: I heard Abū Isḥāq say, “Hudhayfah used to travel every Friday from al-Mada’in to Kūfah.” Abū Bakr added, “Is that really possible?” He replied, “He had a very swift mule.”

Ibn Saʿd said: “Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī informed us, saying: ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn…"
