‘what have you seen?’ The Prophet then related to him what had occurred. Waraqah said, “That is the nāmūs (the angel of revelation) who was sent to Moses. If only I could be a vigorous youth when your people drive you out!” The Prophet asked, “Will they really drive me out?” He replied, “Yes. No one has ever brought what you have brought without being opposed and harmed. Should I live to see that day, I will champion you with decisive support.” Not long thereafter, Waraqah passed away.
Al-Tirmidhi transmitted—through Abu Musa al-Ansari, from Yunus ibn Bukayr, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that she said: Khadījah asked the Prophet ﷺ about Waraqah, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, he believed in you, yet he died before your call became openly manifest.” He ﷺ replied, “I saw him in a dream wearing white garments; had he been among the people of the Fire, his clothing would have been otherwise.”
In the mursal reports of ʿUrwah it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I have seen for Waraqah one garden—or two gardens—in Paradise.”
Al-Zuhri also narrated—from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that “revelation paused for a time, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became so sorrowful that he would repeatedly set out to the summits of high mountains intending to hurl himself from them. Whenever he reached the peak and was about to cast himself down, Gabriel would appear before him and say, ‘O Muḥammad, you are truly the Messenger of Allah.’ His heart would then be soothed and he would return. But when the pause in revelation grew lengthy, he would go out again intending the same, and each time he reached a mountain peak Gabriel would appear and say as before.” This was recorded by Aḥmad in his Musnad and by al-Bukhārī.
Hishām ibn Ḥassān narrated—from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was commissioned as a prophet at the age of forty. He remained in Mecca for thirteen years while revelation came to him, after which he was commanded to emigrate; he emigrated for ten years, and he died at the age of sixty-three.”
