Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He carried the banner of his clan on the day Mecca was conquered, and later he was the commander of the army that took Nahawand (1), where he was martyred that very day (2).

He was known for having his prayers answered; ʿUmar announced his death to the Muslims from the pulpit and wept.

Those who transmitted reports from him include his son Muʿāwiyah, Maʿqil ibn Yasar, Muslim ibn al-Hayḍam, and Jubayr ibn Ḥayyah al-Thaqafī.

He was killed in the year 21 AH, on a Friday (3).

Zāʾida said: ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb al-Jarmī narrated to us, my father narrated to me:

News of Nahawand and of Ibn Muqarrin was slow in reaching ʿUmar, and he kept beseeching Allah for victory. Because of the persistence of his supplication, the people had no other concern but Nahawand and Ibn Muqarrin.

A Bedouin who had emigrated then arrived. When he reached al-Baqiʿ he asked, “Has any news from Nahawand reached you?”

They said, “What is that?”

He replied, “Nothing.”

ʿUmar sent for him; when the man came he said, “I set out with my family as emigrants until we reached such-and-such a place. As we were departing, we encountered a rider on a red camel the like of which I have never seen. I asked, ‘Servant of Allah, where have you come from?’

“He answered, ‘From Iraq.’

“I asked, ‘What is the news among the people?’

“He said, ‘The people fought at Nahawand, Allah granted its conquest, and Ibn Muqarrin was killed. By Allah, I do not know who this Ibn Muqarrin is, nor do I know what Nahawand is.’

“ʿUmar asked, ‘Do you know which Friday that was?’

“He said, ‘No.’

“ʿUmar said, ‘But I know. Count the stages of your journey.’

“He replied, ‘We camped at such-and-such a place, then set out and camped at such-and-such a place,’ and he kept counting.

“ʿUmar said, ‘That was Friday such-and-such. Perhaps you encountered one of the couriers of the jinn, for they do have couriers.’”
