Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

they come to die; yet at that moment we have no desire to be in their place. How little fairness our wealthy brothers show us: they love us for our faith but oppose us over worldly affairs. (1)

It was transmitted by Safwan ibn ʿAmr al-Himsi from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr.

Safwan also related—from Ibn Jubayr, from his father—who said:
“When Cyprus was conquered, the captives were led past Abu al-Dardaʾ and he wept. I said to him, ‘Do you weep on a day like this, when Allah has honored Islam and its people?’
He answered, ‘O Jubayr, while this community remained obedient, it was dominant and victorious; once they disobeyed Allah, they suffered what you now see. How insignificant people become to Allah when they disobey Him.’ (2)

Baqiyyah narrated—from Ḥabīb ibn ʿUmar, from Abū ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, from Umm al-Dardaʾ—who said:
‘Abu al-Dardaʾ never related a hadith without smiling. I said to him, “I fear people will think you are foolish.” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never narrated a hadith without smiling.”’ It was recorded by Ahmad in the Musnad. (3)

ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmar reported—from Abū Qudāmah Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd, from Umm al-Dardaʾ—who said:
‘Abu al-Dardaʾ had three hundred and sixty close friends for the sake of Allah, and he would pray for them during the prayer. I spoke to him about this and he said, “No one prays for his brother in his absence without Allah assigning two angels who say, ‘And may you have the like.’ Should I not wish, then, that the angels pray for me?”’ (4)
