Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He ﷺ also said, “The sage of my community is ʿUwaymir.”

This was transmitted by Yaḥyā al-Bablutti, who told us: Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr, from Shurayḥ. (1)

Thābit al-Bunānī and Thumāmah narrated from Anas:
“The Prophet ﷺ passed away and no one had compiled the entire Qur’an except four: Abū al-Dardā’, Muʿādh, Zayd ibn Thābit, and Abū Zayd.” (2)

Zakariyyā and Ibn Abī Khālid narrated from al-Shaʿbī:
“Six men compiled the Qur’an during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, all of them from the Anṣār: Muʿādh, Abū al-Dardā’, Zayd, Abū Zayd, Ubayy, and Saʿd ibn ʿUbayd.” (3)

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Mujammiʿ ibn Jāriyah still had one or two surahs left to learn. (4)

(1) It is mursal (i.e., the Companion link is missing) like the preceding report. (2) Reported by al-Bukhari, Sahih, 9:47–48 (Book of the Virtues of the Quran, chapter: “The reciters among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah”); idem, Tarikh, 7:706; and by Ibn Asakir, 13:370/2. Abu Zayd mentioned here is one of Anas’s paternal uncles, as the hadith itself makes clear. Ali ibn al-Madini states that his name was Aws; Yahya ibn Maʿin identifies him as Thabit ibn Zayd. Others maintain that he was Saʿd ibn ʿUbayd ibn al-Nuʿman, a view adopted decisively by al-Tabarani on the authority of his teacher Abu Bakr ibn Sadaqa; he was nicknamed “the Reciter,” fought at al-Qadisiyya, was martyred there, and was the father of ʿUmayr ibn Saʿd. Al-Waqidi, however, held that he was Qays ibn al-Sakan ibn Qays ibn Zaʿuraʾ ibn Haram al-Ansari al-Najjari. Anas’s remark “one of my uncles” supports the last identification, for that clan belonged to Banu Haram. The restriction implied by the hadith is relative, not absolute, for a large number of Companions memorised the entire Quran; al-Hafiz lists them in Fath al-Bari, 9:47–48. (3) Ibn Asakir, 13:370/2; Ibn Saʿd, 2:355, through the chain Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti – Ismail ibn Abi Khalid – al-Shabi. All the transmitters are reliable and the isnad is sound, though mursal. See also the entry on Saʿd ibn ʿUbayd in Ibn Hajar, al-Isaba, 4:154. (4) Ibn Saʿd, 2:355.
