He lived for sixty-five years. He died in 23 AH in Medina, and on that day ʿUmar [ibn al-Khaṭṭāb] himself went down into his grave.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ghasil related: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah told us, from his father, from his grandfather, that his eye was struck on the Day of Badr and the eyeball fell onto his cheek. The people wanted to cut it off, but said, “Let us go to the Prophet of Allah and consult him.”
He went and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what had happened. The Prophet drew him close, lifted the eyeball and set it back in its socket, pressed on it with his palm and said, “O Allah, endow it with beauty.”
He died, and none of those who met him thereafter could tell which of his two eyes had been injured.⦗1⦘
