Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He was one of the eminent Companions and the maternal half-brother of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī.

He is the one whose eye dropped onto his cheek on the Day of Uḥud; he brought it to the Prophet ﷺ, who pressed it back with his blessed hand, restoring it so well that it became the soundest of his two eyes.⦗1⦘

He has a collection of hadiths to his credit. Among those who reported from him are his brother Abū Saʿīd, his son ʿUmar, Maḥmūd ibn Labīd, and others.

He commanded the vanguard for the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb when the latter set out for Syria, and he was counted among the notable archers.

(1) Ibn Saʿd relates the report in al-Tabaqat 1/187-188 through ʻAli ibn Muhammad, from Abu Maʿshar, from Zayd ibn Aslam and others. Ibn Hisham 2/82—and likewise Ibn Saʿd 3/453—transmit it via Ibn Ishaq, from ʿAsim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatadah; this chain is mursal (the Companion is omitted). Al-Daraqutni and Ibn Shahin record it through ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Udhri, from Malik, from ʿAsim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatadah, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Qatadah ibn al-Nuʿman: his eye was struck on the day of Uhud, fell onto his cheek, and the Prophet ﷺ replaced it, making it the soundest of his eyes. About ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Udhri, al-ʿUqayli says: he is unknown, and a hadith is not upheld on his authority. Al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi (in Dalaʼil al-Nubuwwah) also transmit the story through ʿIyad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Sarh, from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, from Qatadah: his eye was lost on the day of Uhud; he came to the Prophet ﷺ, who restored it so that it became straight. Al-Bayhaqi records—in Dalaʼil al-Nubuwwah, as cited by Ibn Kathir 2/447—the narration of Yahya al-Himmani: “ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ghasil told us, from ʿAsim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatadah, from his father, from his grandfather Qatadah ibn al-Nuʿman, that his eye was injured on the day of Badr, the eyeball drooped onto his cheek; they wanted to cut it off, so they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, ‘No.’ He called him, pressed the eyeball back with his hand, and thereafter Qatadah could not tell which of his eyes had been injured.” The transmitters are trustworthy except for ʿUmar ibn Qatadah: only Ibn Hibban declared him reliable, and no one other than his son ʿAsim narrated from him.
