Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abū Nuʿaym narrated: Abū Janāb reported to us, saying—I heard ʿUmayr ibn Saʿīd say:
“ʿAlī performed the funeral prayer over Sahl and pronounced five takbīrs.
The people asked, ‘What is this?’
He replied, ‘The veterans of Badr possess a superiority over others, so I wanted to make you aware of his distinction.’ (1)

ʿAmr ibn Dīnār transmitted—from ʿIkrima—from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“ʿAlī entered upon Fāṭima with his sword while she was washing the blood from the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, ‘Take it, for I have used it well in battle.’
The Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘If you have fought well, then Sahl ibn Ḥunayf has fought even better.’ (2)
A similar version is also reported as a mursal narration.

  1. Khawwāt ibn Jubayr ibn al-Nuʿmān ibn Umayya ibn al-Burak al-Anṣārī* (Bakh)
He is Imruʾ al-Qays ibn Thaʿlaba ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf al-Anṣārī, of the Aws tribe.
Al-Daraqutni, 1/191; al-Bayhaqi, 4/37; and Ibn Abi Shaybah, 3/303, transmit—through Abd Khayr—that Ali used to pronounce six takbirs over the martyrs of Badr, five over the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, and four over the rest of the Muslims. The chain of transmission is sound. (1) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 3/473. Abu Janab—Yahya b. Abi Hayya al-Kalbi—was judged weak because of his frequent tadlis, yet in this instance he explicitly states that he heard the narration, and the remaining transmitters are reliable. (2) Reported by al-Hakim, 3/409–410, who declared it authentic. He added: “I heard Abu ʿAli al-Hafiz say: we have recorded it with a connected chain only from Abu Yaʿqub al-Manjaniqi; the commonly known version is the report of Ibn ʿUyaynah, from ʿAmr b. Dinar, from ʿIkrima, as a mursal hadith. This specific wording is known only through the narration of Abu Maʿshar, from Ayyub b. Abi Umama b. Sahl, from his father, from his grandfather.” Al-Hakim then reproduced the text.
