Al-Ḥākim relates in his Mustadrak, through the chain of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād: ʿUthmān ibn Ḥakīm told us; my grandmother al-Rabāb told us, on the authority of Sahl ibn Ḥunayf:
“I bathed in the water of a flood and came out with a fever, so the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Tell Abū Thābit to give something in charity.’” (1)
Mālik reports, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl:
“ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah once looked at Sahl ibn Ḥunayf and exclaimed, ‘By Allah, I have never seen anything like this day, not even the skin of a secluded maiden!’ Sahl immediately collapsed. People went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, will you look in on Sahl? By Allah, he cannot even lift his head.’
He asked, ‘Do you suspect anyone regarding him?’
They replied, ‘We suspect ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah.’
So he summoned ʿĀmir, reproached him, and said, ‘Why would one of you kill his brother? If only you had invoked blessing! Go and wash for him.’
ʿĀmir then washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, the ends of his feet, and the inside of his lower garment in a bowl. The water was poured over Sahl, and he rose and walked among the people with nothing wrong with him.” (2)
Abū Ṣāliḥ narrated: “Abū Shurayḥ told me that he heard Sahl, the son of Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl, relate from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Do not be harsh upon yourselves, for those before you only perished because they were harsh upon themselves; and you will find…’”
