the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections. Al-Bukhārī alone records two of his ḥadiths, while Muslim records one. (1)
- Sahl ibn Ḥunayf, Abū Thābit, the Anṣārī from the Aws clan, al-ʿAwfī—a Companion. He was the father of Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl and the brother of ʿUthmān ibn Ḥunayf. He fought at Badr and the rest of the campaigns.
Those who narrated from him include his two sons, Abū Umāmah and ʿAbdullāh; ʿUbayd ibn al-Sabbāq; Abū Wāʾil; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā; Yasīr ibn ʿAmr; and others.
He was one of ʿAlī’s governors. He died in Kūfa in 38 AH, and ʿAlī led his funeral prayer.

وَانْفَرَدَ لَهُ البُخَارِيُّ بِحَدِيْثَيْنِ، وَمُسْلِمٌ بِحَدِيْثٍ (١) .
٦٣ - سَهْلُ بنُ حُنَيْفٍ أَبُو ثَابِتٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ الأَوْسِيُّ * (ع)
العَوْفِيُّ.
وَالِدُ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بنِ سَهْلٍ، وَأَخُو عُثْمَانَ بنِ حُنَيْفٍ.
شَهِدَ بَدَراً، وَالمَشَاهِدَ.
حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ: ابْنَاهُ؛ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ؛ وَعُبَيْدُ بنُ السَّبَّاقِ، وَأَبُو وَائِلٍ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى، وَيُسَيْرُ بنُ عَمْرٍو؛ وَآخَرُوْنَ.
وَكَانَ مِنْ أُمَرَاءِ عَلِيٍّ ﵁.
مَاتَ: بِالكُوْفَةِ، فِي سَنَةِ ثَمَانٍ وَثَلاَثِيْنَ، وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ عَلِيٌّ.
