- Khabbāb ibn al-Arat ibn Jandala ibn Saʿd ibn Khuzayma ibn Kaʿb ibn Saʿd ibn Zayd Manāt, of Banū Tamīm; his kunya was Abū Yaḥyā al-Tamīmī.
He was one of the distinguished early converts. A number of hadiths are narrated from him. Some say his kunya was Abū ʿAbd Allāh.
He was present at Badr and the subsequent campaigns. Among those who transmitted from him are Masrūq, Abū Wāʾil, Abū Maʿmar, Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, ʿAlqama ibn Qays, and several others.
It has been claimed that he died during ʿUmar’s caliphate and that ʿUmar led his funeral prayer. This, however, is untenable; rather, he passed away in Kūfa in 37 AH, and ʿAlī offered the funeral prayer for him. Another report states that he lived seventy-three years.
I was sitting in the Prophet’s Mosque when a man began addressing the people. He said: “We were once with the Messenger of Allah when a man came, prayed at this pillar, hurried through his prayer without completing it properly, and then left. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Had this man died in that state, he would have died with no share of the religion. A person may shorten his prayer yet still perform it correctly.’”
I asked who that man was, and it was said: “Uthman ibn Hunayf al-Ansari.”
The chain of transmission is weak: Ibn Lahiya is unreliable, and Raʾ ibn Uthman has not been declared trustworthy.
