upon their thrones.’
I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, pray that Allah makes me one of them.’
He answered, ‘You will be among the first.’

ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit subsequently married her and took her with him on a naval expedition. On the return journey, a mule was brought for her to mount; it threw her, her neck was broken, and she died—may Allah be pleased with her (1).

I say: It is reported that this was the Cyprus campaign (2) during the caliphate of ʿUthmān.

Her report is narrated through multiple chains in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.

I have been told that the Franks visit her grave.

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, 12/345-346, in the Book of Interpretation, chapter “Day-time Visions”; by Muslim (1912) in the Book of Leadership, chapter “The Merit of Fighting at Sea”; and also by Abu Dawud (2490), al-Tirmidhi (1645), al-Nasa’i 6/40, Ibn Majah (2776), al-Darimi 2/210, and Ibn Saʿd 8/435, on the authority of Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit Umm Haram bint Milhan, who would feed him. Umm Haram was the wife of ʿUbadah ibn al-Samit. One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in while she was delousing his hair; he fell asleep, then awoke laughing. She asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what makes you laugh?” He replied, “A group from my community was shown to me as warriors in the path of Allah, sailing upon the surface of this sea, kings upon thrones—or like kings upon thrones.” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He make me one of them.” He then laid his head down, slept again, and awoke laughing. She asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what makes you laugh?” He said, “A group from my community was shown to me as warriors in the path of Allah, just as I said the first time.” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He make me one of them.” He answered, “You will be among the first.” Later, during the rule of Muʿawiyah, Umm Haram bint Milhan boarded a ship; when she disembarked she fell from her mount and died. Ahmad also records this narration in his Musnad, 6/423, under the Musnad of Umm Haram. (2) The island mentioned is the one known today as Cyprus. The commander of that army was Muʿawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, accompanied by Abu Dharr, Abu al-Dardaʾ and other Companions, in the year 27 AH.
