“A reproaching woman came upon me in the night, chastising me; she keeps rebuking me in the darkness—how far astray her error has gone! (1)
-
She claims that if I obey my clan I shall be harmed; yet what can harm me except their very passing away? (2)
-
So if you really have followed the religion of Muḥammad and the cords of kinship have been cut from you, then stand upon the highest precipice of a barren, windswept, dusty ridge whose parched surface knows no dew. (3)”
I (the author) say: No one has reported that Hubayrah ever accepted Islam.
Umm Haniʾ lived until after the year 50 AH.
Al-Qaʿnabī narrated from Mālik, from Abū al-Naḍr, the freedman of ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd Allah:
Abū Murrah, the freedman of Umm Haniʾ, informed him that he heard Umm Haniʾ say:
“I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of the Conquest and found him bathing while Fāṭimah was shielding him with a cloth. I offered the greeting of peace, and he asked, ‘Who is this?’ I replied, ‘I am Umm Haniʾ bint Abī Ṭālib.’ He said, ‘Welcome, Umm Haniʾ.’
When he had finished his bath, he stood and prayed eight rakʿahs, wrapped in a single garment. I then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, my mother’s son—meaning ʿAlī—claims he will kill a man to whom I have granted protection: So-and-so ibn Hubayrah.’
He said, ‘We grant protection to anyone you have granted, Umm Haniʾ.’ And that was in the mid-morning (duḥā). (4)"
