I said, “Name him, Messenger of Allah.”

He replied, “He is ʿAbd Allah.” (1)

Al-Ansari and ʿAbd Allah ibn Bakr heard this narration directly from him.

Saʿid ibn Masruq al-Thawri also transmitted—from ʿAbaya ibn Rifaʿa—who said: “The mother of Anas was married to Abu Talhah …,” and he related something similar, in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O Allah, bless the two of them in the night they spent together.”

ʿAbaya added, “I later saw that boy with seven sons, every one of whom had completed the Qur’an.” (2)

(1) The chain of transmission is sound. The report is also found in al-Tabaqat, 8/431-432, through Muhammad b. Abd Allah al-Ansari and Abd Allah b. Bakr al-Sahmi, from Humayd, with the same isnad. Al-Bukhari records it, 9/509, at the beginning of the chapter on the aqiqah, through Matar b. al-Fadl – Yazid b. Harun – Abd Allah b. Awn – Anas b. Sirin – Anas b. Malik. Muslim transmits it (no. 2144) in Fada il al-Sahaba, “Chapter on the Virtues of Abu Talha,” through Muhammad b. Hatim b. Maymun – Bahz – Sulayman b. al-Mughira – Thabit – Anas; Ahmad, 3/196, also narrates it through Bahz with this same chain. Ahmad further records it, 3/105-106, through Ibn Abi Adi from Humayd, and through Yazid b. Harun from Humayd, both from Anas; and again, 3/287-288, through Affan – Hammad – Thabit – Anas. (2) Ibn Sa d relates it, 8/434, through Sa id b. Mansur – Abu al-Ahwas, with this chain. All the transmitters are reliable.
