- Umm Sulaym al-Ghumaysāʾ bint Milḥān al-Anṣāriyya – her reports are found in al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī.
She is also called al-Rumaysāʾ; some say her name was Sahlah, others Unayfah, and still others Rumaythah.
She is the daughter of Milḥān ibn Khālid ibn Zayd ibn Ḥarām ibn Jundub ibn ʿĀmir ibn Ghanm ibn ʿAdī ibn al-Najjār, of the Anṣār, clan of al-Khazraj.
She is the mother of the Prophet’s servant, Anas ibn Mālik.
Her first husband, Mālik ibn al-Naḍr, died; thereafter she was married by Abū Ṭalḥah Zayd ibn Sahl al-Anṣārī, to whom she bore Abū ʿUmayr and ʿAbd Allāh.
She was present at the battles of Hunayn and Uhud.
She ranks among the outstanding women.
Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn said: “Umm Sulaym was with the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Uhud, carrying a dagger.” (2)
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated—from Thābit, from Anas—that Umm Sulaym took up a dagger on the day of Hunayn. Abū Ṭalḥah said, “Messenger of Allah! This is Umm Sulaym with a dagger.” She said, “Messenger of Allah, if any idolater comes near me, I will rip his stomach open with it.” (3)
