will be standing at the Cistern, watching to see which of you will come to me. (1)"
Shuʿbah narrated—from Muslim al-Qurri (2)—who said:
“We entered upon the mother of Ibn al-Zubayr—and she was a large, blind woman—and we asked her about the tamattuʿ form of Hajj. She replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted a dispensation allowing it.’ (3)”
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād said: Asmāʾ was ten years older than ʿĀʾishah.
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah reported—from his father and from Fāṭimah bint al-Mundhir—on the authority of Asmāʾ, who said:
“I prepared the Prophet’s ﷺ provision bag in my father’s house when he resolved to emigrate, but I could not find anything with which to tie up either his food sack or his water skin. So I said to my father, ‘I have nothing except my waist-belt.’ He said, ‘Tear it in two and tie them with it.’ For that reason I was called ‘the Woman of the Two Sashes.’ (4)
Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbbād (5) related to me, from his father, from Asmāʾ, who said:
(1) Reported by Muslim, no. 2293, in the section on the Prophet’s merits, chapter: “Affirmation of the Pool of our Prophet ﷺ and its characteristics.” Also reported by al-Bukhari, 11/415 in “Softening the Hearts,” chapter on the Pool, and 13/3 at the beginning of the Book of Trials, through the chain of Nafiʿ ibn ʿUmar, from Ibn Abi Mulayka, who said: Asmaʾ related from the Prophet ﷺ: “I shall be at the Pool, watching for those of you who come to me. Some people will be taken away from me and I will say, ‘My Lord, they are of me and of my community.’ It will be said to me, ‘Do you know what they did after you? By God, they kept turning back on their heels.’”
(2) al-Qurri – with a damma on the qaf and a doubled raʾ – is a nisba to Qarra, a clan of ʿAbd al-Qays. He is Muslim ibn Mikhrāq al-ʿAbdi al-Qurri al-Basri, included among Muslim’s narrators. The manuscript corrupts the name to “al-ʿUrani,” and the printed edition to “al-Qurashi.”
(3) Chain sound. Also in the Musnad, 6/348, through the route of Ruh ibn ʿUbadah from Shuʿbah.
(4) Chain sound. Also in the Tabaqat, 8/250; al-Bukhari, 7/193–194 in the “Virtues,” chapter on the Hijra; and Ahmad, 6/346, through the route of Abu Usama Hammad ibn Usama from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah.
(5) The manuscript reads “Muʿadh,” a scribal error.
