ʿAbd Allah ibn Numayr, on the authority of al-Ajlaḥ from ʿĀmir, reported:
Asmāʾ bint Umays said, “O Messenger of Allah! These people claim we are not among the Emigrants.”
He replied, “Whoever says that is lying. You have two emigrations: you emigrated to the Negus and you emigrated to me.” ⦗1⦘
Al-Shaʿbī said, “The first person to veil a woman’s bier—that is, to cover it with the canopy (al-mukabbah)—was Asmāʾ; she had seen the Christians do so in Abyssinia.” ⦗2⦘
Al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah ⦗3⦘ narrated from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shaddād, from Asmāʾ bint Umays, who said:
“When Jaʿfar was killed, the Prophet instructed me, ‘Mourn ⦗4⦘ for three days, then do whatever you wish.’ ⦗5⦘

(3) The printed edition has a typographical error, reading ʿUyayna instead.
(4) Al-Nihaya explains: “Put on the mourning dress, which is called al-salab; the plural is salb. A woman who wears it is said to have tasallabat. It is also said to be a black garment with which the bereaved woman covers her head.” In the printed text the verb was corrupted to tasli, whereas both the Tabaqat and Sahih Ibn Hibban read taslami. Ibn Hajar remarks in Fath al-Bari, 9/429, that Ibn Hibban produced the wording taslami, substituting m for b, interpreting it as an order to “submit to Allah’s decree.” He adds that limiting it to three days is because anxiety is greatest at the beginning. This, says Ibn Hajar, shows Ibn Hibban misread the word and forced an explanation; the wording found in al-Bayhaqi and others is: “The Messenger of Allah ordered me to tassallab (wear mourning clothes) for three days,” proving his mistake.
(5) Chain of transmission sound, as stated by Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, 9/429. It appears in Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqat, 8/282, and Ahmad, Musnad, 6/396, with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah entered upon me on the third day after Jaʿfar had been killed and said, ‘Do not observe mourning after today.’” Ahmad also records it (6/438) as: “Wear the mourning garment for three days, then do as you wish.” Ibn Hajar, citing his teacher al-Iraqi in the commentary on al-Tirmidhi, notes: The outward sense of this hadith is that a widow’s mourning is not obligatory after the third day, for Asmaʾ bint ʿUmays was the wife of Jaʿfar ibn Abi Talib and mother of his children. Al-Iraqi replied that, on the contrary, the hadith forbids mourning beyond three days, but it is isolated (shadh) and contradicts sound hadiths, and the consensus is against it.
