She had one hadith recorded in the Musnad, transmitted through her cousin’s son al-Hārith ibn Nawfal (1). It is also said that Dihyah al-Kalbi married her (2).
49 – Umm Kulthūm bint ʿUqbah al-Umawiyyah * (B, M, D, T, N)
She was the daughter of ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ—Abān ibn Dhakwān ibn Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Shams ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy—of the Umayyad clan. She, too, was among the Emigrants.
She embraced Islam in Mecca, pledged allegiance, yet was unable to emigrate until the seventh year after the Hijrah. Her departure coincided with the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah. Her two brothers, al-Walīd and ʿUmārah, set off after her and did not relent until they reached Medina, where they said, “O Muhammad, honour for us our agreed condition.”
She protested, “O Messenger of Allah, will you return me to the unbelievers who will seduce me away from my religion? I have no strength for that, and you know how weak women can be.”
Thereupon Allah—exalted is He—revealed: “When believing women come to you as emigrants…” (Al-Mumtaḥanah 60:10),
(1) Reported by Ahmad, 6/432, through the chain of transmission Sharik – Simak – Abdullah b. Umayrah – the husband of Durrah bint Abi Lahab (al-Harith b. Nawfal) – Durrah bint Abi Lahab. She relates: “A man stood up while the Prophet was on the pulpit and asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, which people are the best?’ He answered: ‘The best people are those who recite (the Quran) most, are most God-fearing, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and keep the ties of kinship.’” Sharik had a weak memory, and Abdullah b. Umayrah is an unknown narrator.
