His words “qatin al-nar” (dwellers of the Fire): qatin is the plural of qatin, meaning one who resides there; it may also be treated as a verbal noun, like the expressions “a man of fasting” or “a man of justice.”
Yunus ibn Bukayr and others reported from Ibn Ishaq: ʿAsim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatadah told me, saying, “Someone who heard ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz related to me that he sent me this story taken from the narration of Salman.” He said: “I was told from Salman that the master of Amorium said to him when he lay dying, ‘Go to two thickets (ghaydatayn) in the land of Syria. Once each year, on a single night, a man travels from one of them to the other. The sick and infirm wait for him, and he never prays for anyone’s illness without that person being cured. Ask him about this religion—the religion of Abraham.’
“So I went out and stayed there an entire year until that night arrived. He would appear only to seek respite, and when he came out the crowd overwhelmed me until he entered the thicket; only his shoulder was still showing. I caught hold of him and said, ‘May God have mercy on you! Is al-ḥanīfiyyah the religion of Abraham?’ He answered, ‘You are asking about something that people do not ask about today. A Prophet is about to arise; he will appear among the people of this House, in this Sanctuary, and he will be sent with the shedding of blood.’
“When Salman later told this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, ‘If you have spoken truthfully, O Salman, then you have indeed met one of the disciples of Jesus son of Mary.’
Maslama ibn ʿAlqamah al-Mazani said: Dawud ibn Abi Hind related to us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Salamah al-ʿAjli, who said: ‘A nephew of mine from the desert named Qudamah came and said, “I would like to meet Salman al-Farisi and greet him.” We set out and found him in al-Madaʾin; on that day he was in command of twenty thousand. We found him seated on a couch weaving palm-leaf fibres. We greeted him with peace, and I said, “O Abu ʿAbd Allah, this is my nephew who has come from the desert and wishes to greet you.” He replied, “And peace be upon him.”’
